NAIDOC Week Celebrations
(NAIDOC: National Aboriginal Islander Day Observance Committee)

Young people from the North of the Shire are coming together to  celebrate NAIDOC week with ‘Indigenous Fresh Chords’ at Bruns Soundshell on Saturday 10 July, from 11am-4pm. Byron Council’s Youth Activity CoOrdinator, Belle Arnold has enlisted Bruns CDAT team, Mullum Youth Recreational facility crew, Byron Youth Council and other keen community groups to provide a family fun day with free activities for the kids, arts and crafts and a bush tucker BBQ.
There will be great entertainment featuring the Fresh Chords of talented youngstars performing music, dance and culture.

This year NAIDOC week is celebrating Unsung Heroes, the quiet achievers in the indigenous community who lead by example and help “close the gaps” between indigenous and non-indigeneous and the gaps in knowledge and understanding.

“Young people in our community definitely deserve recognition” said Michele Grant from Bruns CDAT, organizers of the Fresh Chords Youth events, “I’m so impressed with the way they work and play together, young people are leading the way into a brighter, more tolerant and respectful future”.

Indigenous Fresh Chords will feature Dhinawan and the deadly dancers, Nigel Stewart, Hip Hop, Peace Choir and lots more.  The Youth Arts space will include screen printing, sand art and award winning artist Mirra-winni Gaze with her traditional art and baskets.

NAIDOC week celebrations will also be held in Byron on Thursday 8 July, commencing at 10:30 am at the park near Peace Pole (near the Surf Club). Hosted by the Arakwal of Byron Bay there’ll be plenty of fun and food for all the family and lots of music, dance and culture to share.
Young people interested in performing or helping out at the NAIDOC events can contact belle.arnold@byron.nsw.gov.au or Michele on mgrant@smartchat.net.auor phone 66803163.
